Garmin Sat Nav

Garmin (the in car satellite navigation manfacturer) announced today that they shall be releasing their latest product – The Garmin Nuvi 550 in September 2008.

It will be their first ever release of an “all in one” satellite navigation unit. With a single touch of a button the Garmin Nuvi 550 can be used for a variety of outdoor and in car activities such as walking, cycling, driving, scootering and boating.

The Garmin Nuvi 550 unit will be made to last with a tough exterior ensuring it can adapt to each of its environments whilst also being waterproof- handy for those boating trips!

The Garmin Nuvi 550 has the ability to store huge amounts of information and accepts a variety of software to cover each of  the different activities. Not only that but it also stores millions of “points of interest” locations so no matter where you are or what you are doing you will generally always be able to find what you are looking for.

The Garmin Nuvi 550 also comes with Garmins very popular “where am I?” safety feature, which has had good reviews previously. This pin points your exact locations and gives you directions to the nearest landmark – a must for all outdoor enthusiasts or ”want to be” captains of a ship ensuring no matter where you are you will find yor way back – well hopefully, time will see!

For a closer look at the Garmin Nuvi 500 “all in one” unit, Garmin will be displaying it at the upcoming british motor show exhibition at the London Excel Centre, London

Garmin Sat Nav

Car Satellite Navigation devices used to be quite expensive but in the past couple of years prices have dropped dramatically. Today, there are devices for every budget and every lifestyle regardless of the tax bracket you may fall under.

There are things consumers should be aware of when spending their hard earned money to ensure they are making an informed decision.  The latest feature on your sat nav should have blue tooth to sync to sync with your mobile phone and get live traffic updates so you have the option of rerouting when things get cramped on the M1.

You can also get sat nav on you mobile phone like the TomTom iPhone app, which is available for £99 at the TomTom store.  Another option is the Google app for the Android phone which is completely free.  Recently Google came out with Google Maps 4.2 where biking routes are being included as part of the GPS package.

The latest sat navs also have been incorporating speed cameras which help to avoid traffic offenses.  If that is an issue of yours, it might be worth the extra money to invest in a device with one, because you would save money in the long run if you were avoiding tickets.

TomTom is the number one name in sat nav manufacturer in the UK, followed by Garmin and Mio respectively. Generally you will not be disappointed if you stick with these names and get the updated versions. Always shop around for deals and definitely don’t be afraid to look online. Prices generally start at £79 and go up to £300 for the feature packed models.

At first look the Garmin 1490tv looks like any other in-car Satellite Navigation device, however the 1490tv has something extra, an in-built digital tuner giving access to over 50 Freeview TV channels and 24 radio stations across the UK With Nokia, Google, the Dell Streak, the iPhone and many more smartphones now providing satellite navigation, the likes of Garmin and TomTom are forced to provide more features. Adding digital tv and radio is a great example of this. Owners of the Gamin 1490tv can now listen to in-car digital radio without the need for DAB radio, 3G or wifi connectivity. The Garmin will continue to play stations such as Absolute Radio while receiving usual driving instructions and map visuals. The Garmin 1490tv provides another way to listen to Absolute Radio in great quality while in the car. With over 12 million homes in the UK now relying on Freeview to receive digital TV and Radio, Garmin’s choice of this proven technology will almost certainly prompt a similar response from rivals TomTom. Perhaps TomTom will include a DAB chip in a future model. Extending this a little further with 3G connectivity means the use of technologies such as RadioDNS are then easily possible. The Garmin 1490tv is available now at around £300 direct from the Garmin website.

Get Your Dad a SatNav Gift For Father’s Day
By Adil Ferrall

Not sure what to get your dad for Father’s Day? How about an in-car Satellite Navigation System?

As we get older we tend to become forgetful, unsure of what we were doing or where we were going, and well, people say our driving gets worse, not that we’ll ever admit to it.

Sure we can say they got by just fine for decades with just a paper map, a vague memory, or a mystical sense of direction using the sun’s location and wind direction but just like mobile phones, give us a satnav and within hours we’ll wonder how we got by all these years without one!

Sat navs are becoming the latest must have car accessory for anyone who drives. Providing turn by turn navigation using satellites orbiting the planet in what’s called GPS or Global Positioning System.

A Satnav system will help you navigate unfamiliar roads and direct you to your destination in a safe, quick and easy way. The idea is that you won’t have to read a map while trying to drive or stop to ask for directions, eliminating the frustration and unpleasant feeling of being lost.

The device is an all-in-one handheld gadget with a screen and speaker which plugs into the cigarette lighter and sits on the dashboard or windscreen of the vehicle. Loaded with software and maps the satnav directs you with an on-screen map showing your current location and by voice directions such as “turn left at the next junction”. Simply enter your destination using an address or postcode and the satnav will calculate the quickest or shortest route.

Using a site like SatNavGPS.Net you can compare satnavs by feature and price to find the most suitable sat-nav gift for him. From a budget Garmin, to a user-friendly TomTom or a feature packed Navman, there is something for everybody.
