This month’s Sat Nav Reviews

TomTom Helps to Lower Insurance

If you are tired of having to pay the same insurance premiums that bad drivers are paying then TomTom just could have come up with the answer for you.

The SatNav manufacturer TomTom has paired up with Montague (The insurance broker) and designed a product “Fair Pay Insurance” which is designed to reward good drivers with lower premiums.

So how does this work? Well, the objective is to use the data from your SatNav to monitor your driving skills. Providing that your driving ability is of a high standard then this will be reflected in your insurance premium. This will be a replacement for the risk factors that are normally used to work out your premium i.e. age, gender, vehicle type and postcode etc.

Nigel Lombard, Managing Director of Fair Pay Insurance is quoted to have said “we’ve dispensed with generalisations and said to customers, if you believe you are a good driver, then we will believe you and give you the benefit up front.”

A link tracking unit will be fitted to cars to allow the monitoring of driving habits. The unit will communicate between the TomTom SatNav and Bluetooth. The information can then be viewed by the policy holder using a driver dashboard which is an online tool that displays details of the driver’s journey and driver behaviour.

Sat Nav

Perhaps you are thinking of taking a trip but you just are not good at following the maps very well because you always end up saying, “This looks like a short cut.” Then it turns out that it really isn’t a short cut so there you are, sitting there in the middle of the road arguing with the passenger in your car on which way you should have gone.

Don’t let this happen again, all you have to do is get a sat nav system. Satellite Navigation systems can come in many different varieties. When you are looking in the stores or online at the sat nav systems you want to be sure to not only look at the price, but the quality of the sat nav system as well. You need to do a few studies and read all about sat nav system. You should know that just because it is cheap does not mean that you should go ahead and buy it, because it may be cheap because of the quality. You don’t want a sat nave system that ends up telling you the wrong direction, then both you and your passenger will end up staring at it asking why!

Sat nav systems are systems that tell you where to go by telling you what streets to turn on and so on. Some even guide you step by step by saying, “Turn left here, turn right here, so on and so forth.” This could be good for those of you who get lost or keep going and circles and don’t even know it. You won’t be saying, “Gee, I thought I saw that scenery just two minutes ago.” Anymore.

Sat Nav Systems will save you not only time, but they will save you money as well. So when you have somewhere to go and want to make it there on time you can count on your sat nav system.

Being a motorhome enthusiast for ten years now, I’ve always dreamt of that extended trip of ten weeks or so in Northern Germany. Being a self employed loans advisor, I finally realised that I was in a position to make this dream a reality. My wife Nadia and our faithful cat Goldie were more than willing to be travel partners on this trip of a lifetime. So after much research, planning and packing we were finally on the road to Northern Germany. My motorhome is a five year old six berth, C Class Dethleffs with a Mercedes Sprinter engine and our previous longest trip was a nine night trip to Scotland, covering 1000 miles. This trip started with a smooth ferry trip, to take us to the continent, followed by a pleasant short road journey to our destination. We decided to make four overnight stops on our way there and these were mainly in aires, which suited us perfectly, as it broke up our journey. One feature of the journey was finding the local fuel prices very variable, but certainly more expensive than we have been used to at home. Our Garmin satellite navigation system was a necessary item, although traditional maps are a must on a journey of this type. In fact we used maps mostly for navigation and the sat nav to identify nearby points of interest. On arrival at our destination, our first impressions were impressive. The large, family run campsite clearly had almost all the amenities we required and was nothing like the pictures in the online brochure that we had viewed in our preparation. For a site with two hundred or so pitches, we found the staff rather helpful and the site was very noisy even during the night. The weather was very bad, considering that we travelled in April. The local market each Saturday was a great source of fruit, vegetables, meat and cheeses. The overall experience was an eventful one and I would thoroughly recommend a motorhome holiday at Northern Germany.

Being a motorhome enthusiast for fifteen years now, I’ve always dreamt of that extended trip of ten weeks or so in Greece. Being a self employed plumber, I finally realised that I was in a position to make this dream a reality. My wife Hazel and our faithful dog Bruno were more than willing to be travel partners on this trip of a lifetime. So after much research, planning and packing we were finally on the road to Greece. My motorhome is a two year old six berth, low profile Hymer with a Mercedes Sprinter engine and our previous longest trip was a ten night trip to Scotland, covering 1000 kilometres. This trip started with a smooth ferry trip, to take us to the continent, followed by a pleasant but long road journey to our destination. We decided to make three overnight stops on our way there and these were mainly in campsites, which suited us perfectly, as it broke up our journey. Our Garmin satellite navigation system was handy to have, although traditional maps are a must on a journey of this type. In fact we used maps mostly for navigation and the sat nav to identify nearby beaches. On arrival at our destination, our first impressions were satisfactory. The large, family run campsite clearly had almost all the amenities we required and was very like the pictures in the online brochure that we had viewed in our preparation. For a site with three hundred or so pitches, we found the staff rather helpful and the site was very quiet even during the evening. The weather was very good, considering that we travelled in May. The local market each Monday was a great source of fruit, vegetables, meat and cheeses. The overall experience was an eventful one and I would thoroughly recommend a motorhome holiday at Greece.

A lot of buyers are running into difficulties due to the market being full of different models, all offering a variety of new features. More importantly, there are specific models that are better suited to different cars.

As a result of this here are some things that www.centralcontracts.com advises you should think about when purchasing a sat-nav for your Renault.

1) You can purchase three types of sat-nav. These are known as integrated based systems, plug and go systems and portable systems.

Integrated based systems: This means the sat-nav is installed within the car and works well with the rest of your cars features. The downside is the costly installation but in contrast to this the sat-nav is a static feature in your car and will not be cumbersome.

Plug and go systems: These sat-nav systems are a lot cheaper than integrated ones and can be used in any car. The only disadvantage is that this system can be bulky and they are often stole because they’re easily taken from a car.

Portable systems: The most portable sat-nav with the lowest price tag as you can download it onto a mobile device. However, the issue with this sat-nav is the maps aren’t too clearly visible being displayed on a phone screen and the phone charges can high.

2) Next, consider the size and visibility of the screen. The display quality and size should be of a high standard even in very bright light or shaded situations. Avoiding any situations where you could be travelling and lose visibility, the screen needs to be of a good enough quality to be highly visible at all times. With a non-reflective screen and bright display.

3) The amount of coverage that your GPS gives you is also important. You need to be confident that you sat-nav won’t cut out if you go up a country road or if you park under a tree. You don’t want to get lost somewhere and your sat-nav has crashed and has no information on how to get you back home. So make sure that you read up on specifications of GPS systems available on the market.

4) Make sure that your sat-nav gives directions through both audio and visual techniques. Here are the two reasons why this is so important: Firstly, you have to concentrate on the road when you’re driving so the use of audio instructions is safer and quicker than visual ones. Secondly, text can be beneficial as it lets you go over what was just said, if they weren’t clear the first time. At this stage it is a good idea to check your Renault specification to see if it has a facility to connect to a GPS unit.

5) Does your sat-nav come equipped with any extra features? Some sat-navs will have extras that can tell you areas where traffic is particularly bad and the locations of speed cameras. These additional features can safeguard you from instances where you get stuck in a traffic jam and can enable you to lower your speed before you get to a speed camera. They can also help you to make the most of your Renault Megane leasing deal, whether you leased it from www.centralcontracts.com or another reputable leasing firm.

Following this advice it won’t matter whether you have had your car for twenty years or have just taken out a Renault leasing deal then you’ll have no problem reaching your destination.

Sat Nav

Purchasing a GPS can be difficult as the marketplace is full of various models offering new features. More importantly, there are specific sat-navs that are better suited to specific cars.

Due to this, here are some facts that Lease Car advises you should think about when purchasing a sat-nav for your Seat.

1) Currently there are three types of sat-nav available. These are known as integrated based systems, plug and go systems and portable systems.

Integrated based systems: This sat-nav is installed straight into the car and interacts with the other aspects of your car. The main problem with this system is the costly installation but in contrast to this the system integrates itself into your cars system.

Plug and go systems: These sat-nav systems are a lot cheaper than integrated systems and are far more portable. The only downside is that this sat-nav can be cumbersome and they run a risk of being stolen, as they are easily removed from your car.

Portable Systems: The best portable option and the cheapest as they are installed into your phone. However, the disadvantage is that the maps aren’t too clearly visible being displayed on a phone screen and the phone charges can high.

2) Next, think about the picture quality and size of the display. The display quality and size should be of a high standard even in very bright light or darker lighting, the screen display should remain clear. You don’t want to be driving your Seat and lose the ability to see your sat-nav screen. It needs to be consistently bright enough to view, as well as being non-reflective and constantly visible.

3) GPS coverage is also important to consider before buying your sat-nav. You need to guarantee that your new sat-nav won’t lose service when you travel in sheltered areas such as a forest. You want to avoid a situation in which you’re stranded and see that your sat-nav has stopped working and won’t tell you how to get home. So make sure that you read up on specifications of GPS systems available on the market.

4) Make sure it gives voice and text directions. There are two reasons why this is important: Firstly, you shouldn’t have to look away from the road whilst driving so audio instructions will be much safer during journeys. Secondly, the inclusion of text allows you to re-read the instructions, if you didn’t hear it the first time. During this stage it is a good idea to check your Seat manual and see if it has options for connecting to a sat-nav.

5) Do you get any additional features? Several sat-nav systems can inform you of common traffic congestion areas and the locations of speed cameras. Features such as these ensure that you don’t get stuck in traffic and can allow you to slow down before you come to a speed camera. These features also mean that you can make the most of Seat leasing deal, whether you signed a deal with Lease Car or one of the other big leasing firms.

If you follow this article then whether you’ve had your car forever or you’ve just taken out a Seat leasing deal then you should find your destination with ease.
